Spammers these days are getting creative. They used to be so obvious- RE: You’ve won a million dollars! (just give us your credit card number, social security, and every other piece of identification so we can destroy you). But the new spammer is much more subtle.
A few months ago I started managing WordPress blogs for my company. I was excited when I noticed there were new comments on the site- after all, who doesn’t like getting feedback from strangers? Until I started reading the comments… “wait a sec,” I thought, “this is in Russian. Do we have readers in Russia?” I ran the comments through Google Translate- either something got lost in translation, or the comments were discussing movies in springtime. Ok, weird. This was followed by a whole string of Russian comments, each one stranger than the one before.
Over time I realized this was commonplace for the blog world. Occasionally some “real comments” make an appearance, but generally you just get flooded with spam. Some are blatantly obvious, classic spam lines. But I have started to appreciate the interesting ones. If anything, they are good for a laugh when I get bored at work. Check out some of the comments below:
I wonder how many spam comments this post will generate??
